Maritime Administration (MARAD)

The United States Marine Highway Program, operating under the United States Maritime Administration (MARAD), is an expansive network of navigable waterways across the country. This system of maritime routes serves many uses, including barging of freight, recreation, land congestion reduction, and connecting areas to international trade. The Port of Lewiston is located along Marine Highway M-84, which stretches from Lewiston to the Pacific Ocean near Astoria.

The Port of Lewiston is designated as a United States Marine Highway Sponsor for Marine Highway M-84. Route sponsors are responsible for reviewing and endorsing plans by applicants seeking federal assistance under marine highway grant programs. Sponsors ensure localized oversight for marine transportation proposals within their regions.

The mission of MARAD is to foster, promote and develop the maritime industry of the United States to meet the nation’s economic and security needs. It supports America’s maritime transportation infrastructure – things like ships and shipping, port and vessel operations, national security, environment, and safety. MARAD works to ensure that waterborne transportation integrates seamlessly with other forms of transportation.
