Fiber Optics
Broadband connectivity is no longer just nice to have, but rather is essential infrastructure for today’s society. The Port of Lewiston is working to create enhanced internet connectivity with projects to build both middle mile fiber networks, as well as a community fiber network that will bring high speed internet to every address in Lewiston.
The middle mile network will contribute to the first fiber backbone inside the state of Idaho from Coeur d’Alene to Boise. The Port’s project, running from Moscow to Lewiston to Grangeville, will bring 288 strands of fiber to areas of North Central Idaho that have been unserved or underserved for connectivity.
Within Nez Perce County, the Port is partnering with Pivot Tech Development to create a local network built for the community’s needs. Managed by a new nonprofit, this fiber network will keep rates low and quality high, with 1 gig up/down speeds and local management. Without involving any tax dollars or local debt, this new network will keep the control and ownership of our fiber with the community.
